Epilepsy is a disease of the nervous system (brain). अपस्मार हा चेतासंस्थेचा (मेंदूसंबंधी) आजार आहे.
The patient is having epileptic seizures. These types of seizures are caused by a birth defect in the brain or an accidental head injury. Epilepsy can occur in people of any age. Epilepsy, which often occurs in children, worsens with age. Although fits in this disease cannot be avoided, they can be controlled with proper treatment.
Symptoms of epilepsy :-
- The patient’s body balance suddenly deteriorates, weakness occurs and falls down unconscious.
- Body twitches, convulsions occur.
- Strange body movements occur.
- Tongue or oat is bitten with the teeth, the teeth are clenched.
- Foaming starts from the mouth.
- Patient rolls eyes, loses consciousness.
The duration of seizures caused by this disease is one to three minutes. Such 1-2 minute seizures do not cause internal damage to the brain. But if such seizures occur frequently and the duration of such seizures increases from minutes to hours, brain damage can occur. It can also cause physical injury due to sudden unconsciousness and falling down.

Reasons for Epilepsy/Seizures/Fits :-
- Due to mental stress,
- Due to insufficient sleep,
- If fever-cold-cough is a disease,
- If blood pressure increases,
- If the blood sugar level drops,
- During menstruation in women,
- Anti-psychotic or Anti-depressant *Due to side effects of drugs,
- Due to head injury, *Due to severe sun exposure.
- Chances of having an epileptic seizure increase.
This is How Seizures/Fits are diagnosed :-
If you have frequent fits Epilepsy needs to be diagnosed by a neurologist. Patient history, physical examination and E.E.G (Electroencephalography), MRI scan, CT scan etc. It is diagnosed by tests.
Here are the treatments for Seizures/Fits :-
Anti-epileptic drugs are started first after the diagnosis of epilepsy by a specialist doctor. If the epilepsy is not controlled by drugs, simple and easy surgery on the brain can successfully treat epilepsy.

What to do if someone has a Epilepsy/Seizures/Fits?
- If a person has a fit, keep calm yourself and don’t panic.
- Do not forcibly move a patient who is having a seizure.
- If there are any objects around the patient that could injure the patient, remove them.
- The patient should be dried on the left or right side so that the saliva or foam stuck in the patient’s mouth will come out.
- Then the patient should lie on his back and place a pillow under his head.
- Do not insert anything like spoon to open the patient’s mouth.
- Do not touch the patient’s nose with objects like slippers, onions.
During an epileptic attack, the patient loses consciousness for two to three minutes. After a while the patient regains consciousness automatically. Sometimes a medical emergency may be required. If the patient does not regain consciousness even after 10-15 minutes, the patient should be immediately taken to the hospital or call 108 for an ambulance.
