- पेशवा बाजीराव उस समय मराठा सेना के महान सेनापति थे। एक बार वह कई सफल लड़ाइयाँ लड़कर अपनी राजधानी लौट रहे थे।
- रास्ते में उन्होंने अपनी सेना के साथ मालवा क्षेत्र में डेरा डाला। उनके सैनिक लंबे यात्रा के बाद बहुत थके हुए और भूखे थे। उनके पास खाने के लिए पर्याप्त भोजन नहीं था l
- पेशवा बाजीराव ने अपने एक सेनापति को बुलाया और आदेश दिया, “सौ सशस्त्र सैनिकों के साथ ग्रामीण इलाकों में जाओ। खेतों से मकई काटकर हमारी सेना के लिए शिविर में ले आओ।”
- सेनापति सौ सशस्त्र सैनिकों के साथ ग्रामीण इलाकों में चला गया। रास्ते में उनकी मुलाकात एक किसान से हुई।
- सेनापति ने किसान से कहा, “कृपया हमें इस क्षेत्र के सबसे बड़े मकई के खेत में ले चलो।” तो किसान उन्हें एक बहुत बड़े मकई के खेत में ले गया।
- सेनापति ने सैनिकों को मकई काटकर अपने थैलों में डालने का आदेश दिया।
- किसान ने सेनापति से अनुरोध किया, “सरदार, कृपया इस खेत में मक्का न काटें। मैं आपको दूसरे खेत में ले जाऊंगा जहां फसल पक कर तैयार हो जाएगी।”
- सेनापति और सैनिक किसान के साथ दूसरे मक्के के खेत में गए जो वहां से कुछ मील दूर था। यह एक छोटा सा मकई खेत था।
- किसान ने कहा, “सरदार, कृपया इस खेत से उतना मक्का काट लीजिये जितना आपको चाहिए और अपने अपने साथ ले जाइये।”
- सेनापति ने गुस्से में किसान से पूछा, “तुमने हमें इस छोटे से खेत के लिए इतनी लंबी दूरी क्यों तय कराई? यह खेत पिछले वाले खेत से बहुत छोटा है।”
- किसान ने नम्रता से कहा, “सरदार, क्रोधित न हों। वह खेत मेरा नहीं था। यह मेरा है और इसलिए मैं आपको यहां लाया हूं।”
- किसान के जवाब से सेनापति का गुस्सा ठंडा हो गया। वह बिना कुछ खाए वापस पेशवा बाजीराव के पास पहुंचे और उन्हें अपना अनुभव बताया।
- पेशवा बाजीराव को अपनी गलती का एहसास हुआ। वह स्वयं किसान के मक्के के खेत में गया। उसने किसान को मक्के की कीमत सोने में चुकाई और खेत से सारा मक्के इकट्ठा कर लिया।

Peshwa Bajirao was a great commander of the Maratha army at that time. Once he was returning to his capital after fighting many successful battles.
On the way he camped in the Malwa region with his army. His soldiers were very tired and hungry after a long journey. They didn’t have enough food to eat.
Peshwa Bajirao called one of his generals and ordered, “Go to the countryside with a hundred armed soldiers. Cut the corn from the fields and bring it to the camp for our army.”
The commander went into the countryside with a hundred armed soldiers. On the way he met a farmer.
The commander said to the farmer, “Please take us to the largest corn field in this area.” So the farmer took them to a very large corn field.
The commander ordered the soldiers to cut the corn and put it in their bags.
The farmer requested the commander, “Sir, please do not harvest the corn in this field. I will take you to another field where the crop will be ripe.”
The commander and the soldiers went with the farmer to another corn field a few miles away. It was a small corn field.
The farmer said, “Sardar, please harvest as much corn as you need from this field and take it with you.”
The commander angrily asked the farmer, “Why did you make us travel such a long distance for this small farm? This farm is much smaller than the previous one.”
The farmer said politely, “Sardar, don’t be angry. That field was not mine. It is mine and that is why I have brought you here.”
The farmer’s reply cooled the commander’s anger. He returned to Peshwa Bajirao without eating anything and told him his experience.
Peshwa Bajirao realized his mistake. He himself went to the farmer’s corn field. He paid the farmer the price of corn in gold and collected all the corn from the field.
Lesson:- Anyone can be understood with humility.
