A preposition:- ENGLISH GRAMMAR

preposition may be defined as a word or gropu of words (eg. at, in,
out,, of etc) used before a noun, pronoun, gerund, etc. to show its relation
with another word in a sentence.

  • for example:- He was born in 2004.
  • She went out of the room.
  • They came here at 5 p.m.

These prepositions relate to time, place, position, direction, means,
etc.

Now we learn about Preposition of Time:-(FOR, SINCE, FROM, TILL/UNTILL, BEFORE AND AFTER)

FOR :- For is used with period of time to indicate how long an action lasts. It is generally used with the Perfect Tense but is also used with other tenses.

  • for example :- She will not be here for another three hours.
  • We stayed there for fifteen days.
  • They have lived here for five years.
  • It rained continously for twelve hours.
  • They have been working for two hours.

SINCE :- Since is used with point of time in the past from which some action began and it continues till the time of speaking. It is generally used with the Perfect Tense.

  • for example :- Everything has changed since the last summer.
  • It has not rained since the end of June.
  • He had been writing novels since he was thirty years old.
  • He has lived here since 2005.

FROM :- From indicates the starting point of an action in the past or future. It is always used with ‘to’ or ’till’.

  • for example :- She lived with them from the age of ten.
  • They lived here from 2005 till/untill 2015.
  • We worked from morning to/till evening.
  • She is interested in the period from 1980 to 2010.
  • He lives in his office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

TILL/UNTILL :- Till/Untill are used to show something happening or done up to a particular point in time and then stopping.

  • for example :- I was employed by the company until 2016.
  • He is expected to be here until/till the end of the week.
  • You will heve to wait until my return.

BEFORE AND AFTER :- The preposition before and after are used to relate events to a particular time. Before means earlier than and after means later than something.

  • for example :- She returned before Monday.
  • They came here after 8 o’clock.
  • I get up before five.
  • We went to Paris four years after our marriage.
