Definite article ‘The’.
(Note:- If it is not related to you plz ignore it)

* The article system in English consists of the 

A) Indefinite article ‘a’ or ‘an’ and  

B) Definite article ‘The’..

* We can think of nouns in a specific or general way. When we refer to particular people or things or something that has already been mentioned or can be understood, we use the definite article ‘the’.

Now in this slide we have learn about Definite Article ‘The’.

* The Definite Article ‘The’.

* We can use the definite article before any common noun:
Example:-

  1. The boys were not in the class.
  1. He threw the ball into the river.

* We use the definite article to refer to specific persons or thisngs:
Example:-

  1. The tourists crossed the river in a boat.
  1. I want to meet the principal in the school.

* The definite article is used to refer to the things that are only one in the world:
Example:-

  1. The earth revolves round the sun.
  1. The sun sets in the west.
  1. The moon and stars were shining in the sky.

* We use the definite article with the words such as school, university, prison, when we are referring to a particular buildings:
Example:-

  1. They will visit the school on Monday.
  1. I met him in the university.

* The definite article may be used with the countable nouns that are used in the singular to refer to things more general:
Example:-

  1. If you break the low, you will  be punished.
  1. He played the violin for half an hour.

* The definite article is used to refer to the parts of the body:
Example:-

  1. Smoking is harmful for the lungs.
  1. He cought him by the neck.
  1. There was an injury in the right eye.

* The definite article is used with time expressions:
Example:-

  1. She came here in the morning.
  1. I met her in the evening.

* We use the definite article before something that has already been mentioned.
Example:-

  1. I met a man at the station. The man belonged to Tamil Nadu.

* The definite article is sused before a noun that is followed by a relative clause or a prepositional phase.
Example:-

  1. He put the sweater on the table.
  1. The man i met at the station belonged to Haryana.

* The definite article is used to refer to familiar things we use regularly:
Example:-

  1. She looked at the ceiling.
  1. Suddenly the lights went out.

* The definite article is used before dates or periods of time:
Example:-

  1. We met on the 26th of January.
  1. It is a popular music of the 1980’s.

* The definite article is generally used before a noun which is followed by ‘of’ :-
Example:-

  1. This led to the destruction of the whole village.
  1. The burning of houses rendered people homeless.

* The definite article is used before the names of seas, rivers, deserts, mountains etc.
Example:-

  1. They came across the Himalayas.
  1. The sahara is a famous desert.
  1. The ship crossed the Pacific Ocean.
  1. Delhi stands on the banks of the Yamuna.

* The definite article is used before the names of large public buildings:
Example:-

  1. They went to the Town Hall.
  1. They visited the Taj Mahal.

* The definite article is used before the superlative adjectives:
Example:-

  1. He is the best boy in the class.
  1. She is the most beautiful girl in the school.

* The definite article is used before adjectives such as rich, poor, deaf, dumb, blind etc. to use them as nouns:
Example:-

  1. We should help the blind.
  1. The rich and the poor went to the fair.

* We use the definite article before the nationals of a country or continent:
Example:-

  1. The Indians are very religious.
  1. Some of the Europeans live here.

* We use the definite article before the names of trains and ships.
Example:-

  1. The Rajdhani Express is a very fast train.
  1. The Vande Bharat train is Triple fast express.
  1. The Queen Elizabeth is a famous ship.
  1. The Titanic was famous ship that time.
